1903 - Italo Marchiony received a patent for a mold to make ice cream cups. He originally worked for his cousin selling ice cream and his invention created controversy when ice cream cones went up in popularity. His cousin took him to court for copyright infringement
1937 - the first International Hobbit Day was celebrated
1961 - Antonio Abertondo swam across the English Channel twice making it the first time a person completed a round trip swim across the Channel
1973 - the US swore in Henry Kissinger as Secretary of State, the first Jew to serve in the role until 1977 under both President Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford
1982 - the show Family Ties starring Michael J. Fox debuted on NBC
1985 - Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert for struggling farmers across the country
1994 - the show Friends premiered on NBC (RIP Matthew Perry - personally my favorite character)

Eric Baker (1920) - co-founder of StubHub and Viagogo
Junko Tabei (1939) - first woman to reach Mt. Everests' summit, she also claimed Kilimanjaro, Denali and Mt. Elbrus
