1657 -  the first autopsy and coroner's verdict was recorded in Maryland 

 

1789 -  President George Washington nominated John Jay for 1st Chief Justice 

 

1853 -  Cornelius Vanderbilt circumnavigated the world aboard his private Yacht North Star

 

1869 -  panic on Wall Street after investors Jay Gould and James Fisk attempted to corner the gold market; later known as Black Friday

 

1870 -  the first National library in the Middle East, Dar Al-Kutub (National Library of and Archives of Egypt), was inaugurated in Mustafa Fadel's palace, Cairo

 

1920 -  Babe Ruth became the first to hit 50 home runs in a MLB season

 

1924 -  Boston, MA opened its airport

 

1934 -  2,500 fans saw Babe Ruth's farewell NY Yankee appearance at Yankee Stadium

 

1938 -  Adolf Hitler issued an ultimatum to the government of Czechoslovakia demanding Sudetenland be ceded to Germany

 

1948 -  Mildred Gillars (Axis Sally), an American broadcaster employed by the Third Reich in Nazi Germany to proliferate propaganda during WWII, pleaded not guilty to 8 charges of treason in Washington, D.C.

 

1952 -  KFC opened its first franchise in Salt Lake City, UT after Colonel Harland Sanders franchised his recipe to friend Pete Harman

 

1955 -  President Eisenhower suffered a heart attack on vacation in Denver

 

1957 -  Elvis released Jailhouse Rock, it later became the 1957 Billboard Song of the Year

 

1964 -  The Munsters premiered on TV

 

1969 -  2,500 fans attended the 1st Elvis convention in Cincinnati 

 

1976 -  Patty Hearst was sentenced to 7 years for her part in a 1874 bank robbery; she was released after 22 months by President Jimmy Carter and pardoned by President Bill Clinton in 2001

 

1977 -  1st broadcast of the Love Boat on ABC

 

2007 -  The Big Bang Theory starring Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco premiered on CBS

Arthur Guinness (1725) -  founder of the Guinness brewery. I don't drink but I am Irish and the factory tour was very interesting. I do like the Guinness Book of World Records
