1789 -  President George Washington named Samuel Osgood the country's 1st postmaster general

 

1871 -  David Saylor received the 1st patent for Portland cement in the US, Patent No. 119,413. He established the Coplay Cement Co. along with Esias Rehrig and Adam Woolever in 1867. The kills used to produce the Cement still stand in Coplay, PA

 

1914 -  President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Trade Commission Act which created the Federal Trade Commission

 

1934 -  Cunard-White Star Line's RMS Queen Mary was launched and christened

 

1960 -  Presidential nominees Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy squared off in the 1st televised debate in the US

 

1969 -  the Beatles released their final album Abbey Road

 

1973 -  the supersonic airliner, Concorde, completed its 1st non-stop transatlantic crossing, leaving from Washington D.C. and landing in Paris in a record-breaking time of 3 hours and 32 minutes 

 

1991 -  4 men and 4 women entered the Biosphere 2 as part of a 2-year experiment. The self-contained and airtight structure is located in Oracle, AZ and consists of 7,200 Sq. Ft of glass

 

2003 -  Macmillan Cancer Relieve (UK) hosted the largest simultaneous morning coffee break. In over 26,000 mettings around the UK, 576,157 people broke the organizations previous record

John Chapman (1774) - better known as Johnny Appleseed, planted and cared for fruit trees all across the eastern half of the US

Ivan Pavlov (1843) - best known for developing the theory of conditional response, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his study of the physiology of digestion

Mary Russell (1865) - Duchess of Bedford and later earned the nickname "Flying Duchess"

Edith Abbott (1876)

Bill France Sr. (1909) - founded NASCAR in 1948
