1829 -  1st units of the London Metropolitan Police appeared on the streets of the British capital, the city's 1st modern police force

 

1915 -  the 1st transcontinental radio message was sent by US Naval radio station at Arlington, VA to Naval radio station in Mare Island, San Francisco 

 

1916 -  American oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller became the world's 1st billionaire 

 

1932 -  the film Bill of Divorcement starring John Barrymore and Katharine Hepburn premiered at the Mayfair

 

1936 -  the radio was used for the 1st time for a presidential campaign 

 

1940 -  the film Strike Up the Band starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland opened 

 

1948 -  Hamlet directed by and starring Laurence Olivier opened at Park Avenue Cinema. It won the 1949 Best Picture

1977 -  Eva Shain was the 1st woman to referee a heavyweight championship 

 

1979 -  Pope John Paul II became the 1st pope to visit Ireland 

 

1984 -  Elizabeth Taylor underwent substance abuse rehabilitation at the Betty Ford Center where she met construction worker and future husband Larry Fortensky

 

1989 -  Zsa Zsa Gabor was convinced of slapping a police officer in Beverly Hills

 

1994 -  the Pointer Sisters received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame 

 

1998 -  Jive Records released Britney Spears debut single Baby One More Time. It became a worldwide smash, topping the charts in 25 countries 

 

2021 -  Britney Spears' father Jamie Spears was suspended as her conservator by a judge in LA after claims of abuse
