This show was an unexpected find and complete tour de force. If you enjoy intense family drama with Shakespearean overtones and all the feels, laugh-aloud comedic moments, amazing martial arts fighting sequences, a highly talented and diverse cast who inhabits all the characters, be it main or secondary, and a feel-good ending, I highly recommend this series!

The cast was stellar, led by a superb as always Michelle Yeoh. Her portrayal of the matriarch was flawless and faceted. The emotion she can conjure with subtle changes in her facial expression is nothing short of perfection. Chien, a new-to-me actor, gave an equally nuanced performance. So many times actors who play the brooding sexy hero role only get the brooding part right. Chien got everything: the conflict of being the older son, the smoldering and suppressed emotion, the tenderness and longing, and the ironic humor. Truly, perfection! Sam Li, who played the younger Brother Sun, was amazing as well, offering comedic relief but also acting as an emotional mirror to his (messed-up) family.

The script itself had some obvious plot holes, but I think those are due to the tropes of the genre (e.g., the hero taking down, like, 25 villains in hand-to-hand combat when all the villains needed to do was shoot him lol) and did not detract from my enjoyment. There are some gory moments, so if you don't like on-screen violence, this movie may not be for you. Overall, I would say the script did a terrific job of developing the characters and taking the plot on twists and turns that kept me engrossed. And perhaps my favorite part was the comedy, which I found fresh and hilari
