For most of the time I've been an anime watcher I've been very picky about what I watch. I've mostly stuck to action, sci-fi, supernatural, horror, and thriller type plots (even better if there's some comedy in there). I stayed away from anything explicitly noted as romance or "slice-of-life". And after learning my lesson from DragonBall Z, I don't watch really popular anime that seems like it'll never end or has a ton of filler (looking at you One Piece and Naruto).
But lately I've been going ahead and giving romcom and slice-of-life animes a chance and have been pleasantly surprised. Like I see why my younger self thought this stuff was cheesy and forced, but as I've gotten older I've apparently learned to appreciate the humor of awkwardness and the sappy stuff. As long as I'm watching it alone 😭
I still don't think I'll be watching One Piece anytime soon, but maybe I can bear it to get through Full Metal Alchemist one of these days.
