Ulex Europaeus (also known as Gorse) has an interesting history of economic use. It has a strong relationship with fire. It is particularly flammable, partly due to the retention of old, dry spines beneath the outer clothing of green shoots. It was widely used in the British Isles and Brittany, especially in bread ovens, as well as lime and plaster kilns.
