If what you want is to have strong abs or simply be in shape, what you have to do is train your abs every day, be constant and little by little you will notice the results.
You can train them both at home and in the gym, the important thing is that you train them several times a week.
I personally have been working on my abs for years and I love showing them off in the summer.
To start a good routine I recommend a personal trainer.
